  1. Browsing the Book Faire!

“The oldest books are still only just out to those who have not read them.”  - Samuel Butler

Are you a true bibliophile? If you love books as much as some of us, then you know how wonderful it is to walk into a library full of vintage and antique books…the colors, the bindings, the covers and the smells…it’s all intoxicating in a way that many can’t understand. A real lover of books understands what it’s like to hold a real book in their hands and sift through the pages. Which is why vintage and antique books are just that much more special. Owning physical books has really become an art.

“Old books exert a strange fascination for me — their smell, their feel, their history; wondering who might have owned them, how they lived, what they felt.” - Lauren Willig

If you’re one of those “bookish” people, then we have the perfect auction for you. The Vintage and Antique Book Faire is running today (Monday, June 25th) at 4pm PST. I can foresee a tiny bit of skepticism; perhaps you’re wondering what’s going to show up in an online auction for old books? So, here’s what to expect…

Sellers should date and describe the condition of the books. Books should be from 1960 or before. Perfect items to list would be books with hand cut pages, beautiful drawings, classic literature, poems, etc.

The more recognizable the item, the better it will do! We would love to see first editions, notable cookbooks and book about important historical events.

And while these may be “good” reads, they don’t quite fit into this auction: Tom Clancy, Twilight, magazines or clippings and comic books. Thanks!

To assure you that there is a myriad of exquisite classic, vintage & antique books up for auction, we wanted to provide you with this preview.

Oh and can’t forget any classic Dr. Seuss!

  2. Tips for Buyers: What is a Vintage or Antique item?

This Wednesday, March 28 is a perfect opportunity to discover new Vintage and Antique items such as this from Joyful Jewelry Designs:

    Vintage Silver Carved Spoon Ring

Or this Antique Button Steampunk Brooch from Candyrot:

    Antique Button Steampunk Brooch

As you’re browsing the items for Wednesday’s auction, the following question may come to mind:

What makes something “Antique” vs. “Vintage”?

Antique – in the context of Tophatter, Antique is considered anything pre-1940s.

Vintage – Vintage can vary in definition a little but for the most part, it means items that are older than 20 years are vintage.

So, what should I do if I can’t verify it?

Use a synonym: old, retro, classic, loved, or some other accepted synonym that can be equally effective in conveying that it’s a nice piece from the past.

And what about the items in the auction?

It’s up to the seller to provide buyers with accurate information in regards to whether an item is actually an “antique” or “vintage” piece. As a buyer, you can always inquire about the origins of a piece during the live auction. However, hopefully knowing what you do now – you’ll be able to enter into the auction as a better-educated buyer!

Come join us Wednesday at 11AM PT. Tally ho and happy bidding!
